Bleeding Nose

'Epistaxis' is the medical term for bleeding from the nose.
Causes
The most common cause of epistaxis in young people is not known unless it is a result of picking of the nose or injury. In summer these episodes occur more in young persons. In older patients, rarely high blood pressure can cause epistaxis, especially if the diastolic pressure is more than 110 mm/Hg. High exposure to heat sources such as the sun or fire also leads to bleeding.
Herbal Medicines
The patient should wash his face and head with cold water.
Icepacks should be applied from outside on the nose.
One should not sneeze or put any type of strain on the nose which aggravates bleeding.
If B.P. is high, anti-hypertensives should be taken under medical advice.
Juice of flower of pomegranate should be used for deep inhalation.
Juice of Durva grass 5 to 10 drops in each nostril gives immediate relief.
Ayurvedic Remedies
Vasa Avalehya is a semisolid sweet preparation. One teaspoonful well mixed in a cup of cold milk should be taken orally 3 times a day. It checks the bleeding. Inspite of all these measures, if bleeding does not stop, an ENT surgeon's consultation is a must without delay.
Anu Tailam in a dose of 2 to 5 drops in each nostril for inhalation can stop bleeding.
Styplon tablet (Himalaya Drugs) 1 to 2 tablets twice or thrice daily gives very good results.
Chavanaprash can be given one teaspoon twice daily with milk. It is a rich source of Vitamin C.
Amla Churan is also helpful in such conditions in the dose of ½ teaspoon twice daily with water.
Do's & Don'ts
The patient or person, who has a history of bleeding should avoid all hot and spicy things in eatables. He should maintain normal blood-pressure. He should not remain awake at nights
