Infertility

Infertility is the inability in a woman to conceive or in a man to induce conception. It is a problem of grave concern for childless couples, who feel that life is void without a child.
Causes
Infertility can be due to factors affecting one or both the partners.
The man's sperms have to be healthy, in sufficient numbers and finally they need to be deposited high enough in the woman's vagina to make their way to an ovum.
If there is trouble with conception, it could be because:
The man's sperm count is low, or
Because there is a blockage in his spermatic tubes.
Similarly in the woman's case:
She may not be producing eggs
Her Fallopian tubes may be blocked
Sometimes her womb can be retroverted (tipped backwards) or filled with fibroids
Her cervical mucous can be hostile to sperms
Apart from these there are many other reasons why conception does not take place, including the fact that the couple may not be indulging in sexual intercourse around the time of ovulation.
Signs & Symptoms
If a couple have had normal, regular intercourse without using contraception for a year and the womanhas not conceived, then the chances are that there is a fertility problem and they should consult a doctor, who may refer them to a fertility centre.
Herbal Medicines
Sperm and egg production can sometimes be improved with medicines. Tubal obstructions can be dealt with by surgery.
Banyan Tree Bark: The bark of this tree should be removed and dried well in the shade. Then this bark should be finally powdered. 10 gm of this powder along with 10 gm of sugar should be taken once early in the morning by both the partners daily for 60 days. This may help in this condition.
The root of Lakshmana taken during Pushya Nakshatra and crushed in gheekavar juice and then taken orally. It is to be taken with milk mixed in pure ghee on empty stomach for 3 to 7 days after menses.
Ayurvedic Remedies
Phala Ghritam is an ideal medicine in female sterility if the damage is purely functional and not structural. 5 gm of this medicated ghee should be taken well mixed in a cup of hot milk once a day in the morning.
Aswagandha powder 5 gm once a day with milk is the good remedy for male partners.
Vanga Bhasma is a drug of choice given in the dose of 120mg mixed with honey twice daily.
M2 tone syrup (Charak Pharma) 2 teaspoons mixed with equal quantity of water taken twice daily after meals for 2 to 3 cycles.
Addyzoa tablet (Charak) 2 tablets twice daily with water or milk is very effective in male infertility.
Speman Forte and Tentess Forte tablets of Himalaya drugs are both useful drugs for males.
Do's & Don'ts
The female partner should keep the lower part of her body in a raised position, during sexual act, and for 15 minutes after the act. This allows the sperms to be deposited higher up in the genital tract.
