Pyorrhoea

Pyorrhoea is characterized by copious discharge of pus from the root of the teeth and gums.
Causes
Poor oral hygiene is the main cause of pyorrhoea. Not brushing the teeth daily and not cleaning the mouth after intake of food give rise to infection by various types of organisms.
Signs & Symptoms
The patient has difficulty in chewing food especially hard ingredients since these produce pain and bleeding from the gums. Pus from the gums and teeth produces foul smell in the mouth and teeth fall out one by one. Some may have fever if infection is severe or diarrhoea and gastritis due to swallowing of pus.
Herbal Medicines
Prop-root of banyan tree should be used for brushing teeth.
Twigs or tender branches of neem can also be used for same purpose.
Ayurvedic Remedies
'Gum tone' (Charak) powder used daily for 2 months gives good results.
Triphala powder or decoction of it is very useful if patient is constipated.
Bakula and Babula are very good and are used as tooth powders.
Dasana Samskara Churna is another drug of choice. This is either used by finger or soft brush daily for 15 days.
Do's & Don'ts
Food rich in Vitamin-C is good for these type of patients.
Vegetables like karela, potato and drumstick are useful.
Avoid things which stick to the roots of teeth as far as possible.
